Critics Consensus

Relying on psychological tension rather than overt violence and gore, 1408 is a genuinely creepy thriller with a strong lead performance by John Cusack.

John S This movie doesn't hold up very well. It's got some good tension and plenty of jumpscares but overall, I spent most of my time hoping it would end soon. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Calvin T It's a must see ✌🏾great movie 🎬 Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Audience Member A truly terrifying and seat-clenching horror film that chilled me right down to the bone. Tension is either being raised or held, and at no point does it seem to fall, even in the final minutes of the film. The jump scares are effective but not overdone to the point of predictability, allowing for some moments that made me jump without distracting from the psychological elements that are persistent throughout the film. I thought the film ends a little too well for how terrifying and sinister it presents itself to be and I can't help but feel like Cusack's character should have died at the end. When the hotel occupants were evacuated into the street I was fully expecting them to witness an unsightly and distressing demise, and was left feeling somewhat disappointed when that didn't play out. It felt like this film had too numerous mentions to death for him to have not met the same fate, though the ending we did receive presents its own breed of horror. Regardless, 1408 was a delightfully horrifying film that I am certain to lose sleep over. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review e6e6 e The psychological element to this film kept me entertained but to be honest, it was nothing special. It was alright. Worth a watch. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Starts off good, then gets silly, then jumps the shark. Not a bad movie, but just doesn’t know when or how to end.
